CJA Group Excess Liability Insurance Plan

With litigiousness in the United States growing at an alarming pace, you are exposed to the risk of a personal lawsuit more than ever before.

Broader Protection

Go beyond what is covered under your primary auto, homeowners, renters, recreational vehicle, motorcycle, and watercraft insurance policies.

Higher Limits

Our liability coverages goes up to $50 million for damages and costs you or a covered family member have to pay in a covered lawsuit.

Lower Costs

Group policy rates tend to be lower than individual rates, so your costs may be lower than what you’d pay for comparable coverage.

How It Works

Your auto, homeowner, and watercraft policies may not provide enough protection in the event of a serious loss. You can get additional coverage from an excess liability policy.

Coverage under this type of policy is in excess of your primary insurance. For example, if you have a car accident, your primary auto insurance policy would be your first level of coverage, and Group Personal Excess Liability Insurance from Chubb would be the final level of coverage after all other applicable policy limits are exhausted.

Group Personal Excess Liability Insurance from Chubb provides additional liability coverage, up to $50 million, for damages and costs you or a covered family member have to pay in a covered lawsuit.

We’ve got you – and yours – covered.

If you elect to enroll, the plan automatically covers you, your spouse/domestic partner, and all eligible dependent children (who are residents of your household). Your coverage extends to “permissible use”, meaning anyone who uses a covered vehicle or watercraft with permission from you or a family member.

By enrolling as a member of a group, you get additional coverages at no added cost to you—it all adds up to broader protection, with higher limits, at lower costs.

Required Primary Underlying Liability Insurance Policy Limits

You and your family members must carry the minimum required underlying coverage limits summarized in the chart below. If you do not, you will have a gap in coverage since Group Personal Excess Liability Insurance from Chubb applies above the required underlying limits.

Important: Contact your current insurance carrier or agent to ensure that your personal insurance program has the required underlying limits. If you carry limits under your personal policies that are higher than the minimums required under Group Personal Excess Liability Insurance from Chubb, you can either reduce your underlying limits to the required minimums, or you can continue to maintain the higher limits. If you choose to leave your underlying limits higher than the minimum amounts required, you will simply have more total coverage.

Legal Disclaimer: The policy(ies) we are placing on behalf of the California Judges Association require the minimum participation of AT LEAST 25% of the active membership of the Association. Unless and until we achieve this minimum participation level, coverage will not become effective. It is important that you do not change, alter, cancel, or replace any existing Umbrella or other coverage until we have confirmed with you on an individual basis that coverage has been placed and the group policy is in force. If we are unable to achieve the minimum participation levels required to initiate coverage, no premium will be collected and no coverage will have been bound. This program is not for retired judges unless they are working the bench 20 hours per week or more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Group Personal Excess Liability Insurance from Chubb and why do I need it?
Now more than ever before, Americans are confronted by multiple risks that threaten financial assets and lifestyles. Personal liability lawsuits can run in the multimillion dollar range, and in such cases, personal liability insurance alone may not be enough. Group Personal Excess Liability Insurance from Chubb offers an attractive solution for helping to preserve your assets in the face of an ever-increasing array of liability exposures.
What is covered under the group policy?
Coverage includes personal injury and property damages for which you or a covered household member may be legally responsible in the event of a personal liability lawsuit. Large watercraft and personal watercraft are covered on a first-dollar basis if rented or furnished for 60 days or less. Defense costs for a covered loss are at Chubb’s expense and in addition to the policy limit.
How does it work?
Group Personal Excess Liability Insurance from Chubb provides you or a family member with broad protection and liability limits as an added layer of insurance coverage that sits above your primary auto, homeowners, renters, recreational vehicle, motorcycle and watercraft insurance policies. Group participants have a range of limits to choose from and are charged the corresponding premium.
Who is covered within the group policy?
A “covered person” includes the person who enrolls as a part of the group policy (as shown on participant list) and that person’s spouse or domestic partner, any relative, or any other person under 25 who is in the insured’s or the relative’s care, all of whom must be residents of the same household. Additionally, coverage extends to “permissible use”, which includes any person using a covered vehicle or watercraft with permission from the certificate holder or a family member with respect to his/her legal responsibility arising out of its use.
What types of injuries are included in the Personal Injury coverage?
“Personal Injury” includes: shock, mental anguish, or mental injury; false arrest, false imprisonment, or wrongful detention; wrongful entry or eviction; malicious prosecution or humiliation; libel, slander, defamation of character, or invasion of privacy; and bodily injury including sickness or disease that results from physical bodily harm.
Does a group member have Personal Excess Liability coverage for a rental home that is leased for income?
The group policy will provide Personal Excess Liability coverage if a rental property is covered by the participant’s underlying personal liability policy and meets the definition of “incidental business property” under the group policy.
Are professional and business activities included?
Professional activities are not included in the coverage, but incidental business/farming activities and property are covered, subject to the limitations and exclusions stated in the policy under “business pursuits”.
Is coverage included for a director or officer (of a not-for-profit organization)?
Coverage is included for personal injury or property damage stemming from a covered person’s actions or failure to act arising from activities as a noncompensated director or officer of a not-for-profit organization.
I already have an individual excess liability policy with Chubb or another carrier. Will Group Personal Excess Liability Insurance from Chubb be in excess of that policy?

Since group rates are typically lower than individual policy rates, the cost to you for Chubb Group Personal Excess Liability Insurance may be lower than what you would pay for comparable coverage under your individual policy. And, by enrolling with Chubb as a member of a group, you get additional coverages at no added cost to you.
Can Group Personal Excess Liability Insurance from Chubb be converted to a personal umbrella policy if I leave the group or if the group policy ceases to exist?
No. The policy is not convertible. We recommend that you talk with your personal agent or broker to replace your coverage. (There is a 60-day extension for individuals who are no longer eligible for the group, but in no event does such coverage go beyond the expiration date of the policy.)
